  1. World Population Day was observed on 11th July, 2016, worldwide. This day is celebrated with an intent to raise awareness of global population issues. The theme for this year is ‘Investing in Teenage girls’ and focuses on the empowerment of teenage girls. Teenage girls who face a lack of school and early marriage and motherhood which leaves them vulnerable to illness, injury and exploitation. They are denied even their basic rights. The event was established by the Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme in 1989. The United Nations has said, Leaders and communities must focus on and stand up for the rights of teenage girls, particularly those who are poor, out of school, exploited, or subjected to harmful traditional practices,  marking World Population Day with a call to bolster the success of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by investing in better opportunities for teen girls.

Sushila Karki took oath of office and secrecy to become the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal

  • 64-year-old Karki, who has done her Masters in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University, is known for her ‘zero-tolerance’ for corruption took oath of office and secrecy to become the first woman Chief Justice of Nepal. The appointment of Sushila Karki as Nepal’s first woman chief justice was on Sunday unanimously endorsed by a parliamentary panel, setting the stage for her to take charge at the Supreme Court to lead the judiciary.Karki was recommended for the top judicial post on April 10 this year by the Judicial Council. Her appointment was pending because of the delay in the formation of the PHSC due to some technical reasons. She will head the judiciary till June 6, 2017.

Euro 2016: Portugal beat France to win final with Eder’s extra-time goal 

  • Portugal, the team that finished third in their group, had found a way even on a night when their greatest footballer Ronaldo was taken off on a stretcher. Portugal beat France 1-0  in their Euro 2016 final in extra time. The winning goal kick by Ederzito Antonio Macedo Lopes commonaly known as Eder.

Tin Duncan, the five-time NBA champion and 15-time NBA All-Star announced retirement

The only player in league history to start and win a title in three different decades. The five-time NBA champion and 15-time NBA All-Star Tim Duncan today announced that he will retire after 19 seasons with the organization. He has won five championships and posted a 1,072-438 regular season record, giving the team a .710 winning percentage, which is the best 19-year stretch in NBA history and was the best in all of the NBA, NFL, NHL and MLB over the last 19 years
